2nd Grade Curriculum

Language Arts and Writing

Second graders continue to gain fluency and comprehension skills in reading. The students use leveled readers, the Reading A-Z program, and Fundations. In addition to these tools, second graders:

  • Have weekly spelling tests

  • Improve handwriting skills

  • Begin cursive writing

  • Participate in an ongoing reading challenge program

  • Complete independent book study projects

 

Social Studies

Second graders continue an exploration of citizenship, communities and the Earth’s resources. The year begins with learning about a country and preparation for International Night.

 

Science

Science in second grade are hands on and engaging. Students explore concepts such as:

  • Plants

  • Animals

  • Magnets

 

Religion

Second graders continue to work in the Image of God program from Ignatius Press. In the early spring, the focus turns to preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. The Circle of Grace curriculum is taught to provide a holistic approach to the safety, well-being, and spiritual formation of children and youth. Second graders attend weekly Mass with assistance from their Church Buddies.

 

Math

Students continue to work in the Sadlier Progress in Mathematics program and follow a Math Menu structure to explore:

  • Addition facts with sums through 20 with fluency

  • Subtraction facts through 20 with fluency

  • 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and borrowing

  • Introduction to multiplication

  • The place value systems

  • Extended patterns

  • Symbols as representations in mathematical situations

  • Appropriate standard units of measurement, measuring tools, and measuring strategies

  • Collecting, organizing, presenting, and analyzing data

  • Problem solving skills
