A springtime rite of passage is the school-wide vote for the Red Clover Award and the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award (DCF), the two long-standing student-voted awards in the state of Vermont.   All students in grades 1-3 recently cast their ballot for their favorite picture-book nominee in a field of ten Red Clover choices, and the two top SFX vote-getters were Shh!  We Have a Plan and Lindbergh:  The Tale of a Flying Mouse.

Any student in grades 4-8 who had read at least 5 of the 30 chapter-book nominees was eligible to vote for the DCF Award, and it was a very diverse list of favorites. El Deafo, The One Safe Place, Rain Reign, Unfriended, Gabriel Finley and the Raven's Riddle and Ice Dogs garnered the most votes but many other titles were represented.  Vive la difference!

The state-wide winners for both awards closely followed the votes at SFX.  Taking top honors for the Red Clover Award state-wide was Shh!  We Have a Plan, followed by Lindbergh:  The Tale of a Flying Mouse.    Number one state-wide for the DCF Award was El Deafo, followed by The Crossover and No Summit out of Sight.
