Hi I’m Debbie Lajoie and I have been teaching Art at SFX since 2007. I’m originally from the Bronx, in New York City. I began my college career as an Art major at Hunter College, following in my Dad’s footsteps of being a Commercial Artist and Watercolorist.
I found that I loved nature and rural life more than “The City” – the hub of the art world. So moving to Massachusetts to be closer to my parents' families, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education in Earth Science and Geography from Fitchburg State University. I taught Earth Science, Oceanography and Practical Science at Framingham North High School in Massachusetts. I came to Vermont to work as an Instructor of Extension Education for UVM as the Lamoille County 4H Youth Agent. While my children were growing up, I was a substitute teacher and long term substitute in Lamoille County. I am creative in many ways and have worked as a floral designer and seamstress. Because of my love of teaching and meeting people, I was a step-on-tour guide for a Vermont tour company.
I am an award winning watercolorist & pastel painter, often competing with my Dad at yearly art shows in Massachusetts until his passing in 2014. Stop by my classroom & see if I have one of our painting hanging there.
I am teaching at St. Francis because I can teach & live my faith. God surrounded us with so much beauty and I want to teach the students how to capture this beauty and use their creative abilities. I believe God has given each of us gifts & talents. In teaching art, I love inspiring my students to develop those gifts & talents.
I have been married for 35 years to my husband, Roland. We live in Hyde Park with our dog & cat. We have 2 grown children and a grandchild on the way. I love camping, wildlife, and the outdoors. I’ve been a Girl Scout for over 40 years. In the summer you’ll find me at my off the grid camp on Cape Cod enjoying the water & wildlife.
