CYO Basketball News for the week of January 3rd:

4/5/6 Girls Team:
The St. Francis 4/5/6 girls basketball team had their hard work pay off on Sunday, January 3rd with a win against Christ The King 5th grade team. We have been working on our defense in practices and Aida McCormick has shown some huge improvements with a couple important defensive stops late in the game. Ashleigh Forcier drove strong to the hoop ending with 12 points and Larissa Zierak, Sierra Matte and Madison Booska each added a basket for SFX.

7/8 Girls Team:
The 7/8 girls played another tough game against a very good St. Pius X team on Sunday, January 3rd, but could not come away with a win. The girls ran the offense very well creating almost fifty scoring opportunities, but unfortunately could only cash in on four of those opportunities as the ball bounced the wrong way on several good shots. Arianna and Anna lead the scoring with three points each, with Arianna netting her points going three four from the foul line. Alex, Jessica, and Maelyn finished the scoring with two points each. Team has continued improving throughout the year and Coach Brian, Brittany, and Don are excited to see results of their hard work in the New Year.

4th/5th Boys Team:
Every week the team is showing improvement. The players are learning the offensive plays and working on putting them into action on the court. Looking for the open man and making good basketball decisions is paying off. On defense, the team is working on their man-to-man defense and helping out their teammates. On Sunday, January 10th the team takes on St. John Vianney at 1:00 at Winooski High School. Come cheer them on!

CYO Basketball News for the week of December 20th

4/5/6 Girls Team:
I think all who were there can agree that the third game against Nativity on Sunday, December 20th has been the most exciting yet! The two teams battled back and forth throughout the entire game to keep possession of the lead. With a layup late in the fourth quarter by Ashleigh Forcier (10 points), the SFX girls were able to keep control of the scoreboard and end with the win 17-15. Sierra Matte netted a huge foul shot in the third and Larissa Zierak added six.

7/8 Girls Team:
The girls played SJV in the third game on Sunday, December 20th, and the hard work they put in during practice reflected on the court. The team played stifling defense, was tenacious on the boards, and unselfish on the offensive end working the ball to open players for easy shots securing their first victory of the year. The game truly was a team effort with eight of the nine girls scoring. Alex and Cassidy led the way with eight points each and Ariana netted six including two from the line. Melanie and Jessica frustrated the SJV offense with several steal.

8th Boys Team:
The boys 8th grade CYO team is on a roll. They have won all three of their games to start the season. More good things are to come. Come cheer on the team this Sunday, December 20 at 3 PM against Holy Family and the following Sunday, December 27 at 4 PM versus Cathedral. Both games will be at Winooski High School. SFX School is represented by Jaydon Sartwell, Sean McCormick, Matthew Zuk, and Andrew Zierak.

CYO Basketball News for the week of December 13th:

4/5/6 Girls Team:

The girls played fantastic in their second game against Christ the King 5th on December 13th. Ashleigh Forcier started off strong with three steals resulting in made layups in the first quarter. She kept the same intensity up for the rest of the game and ended with 20 points. Larissa Zierak, Sophia Strouse and Simone McCormick also added points to help secure the win 30-14!

7/8 Girls Team:
The girls matched up with a very tough St. Pius X team in the second game. The girls played hard and created several scoring opportunities, but the basket appeared to have a cover as many shots bounced out in the loss. The team again had balanced scoring with six girls scoring, with Melanie and Amy leading the way with four each.

7th Boys Team:
The 7th grade boys CYO basketball team was handed their first loss of the season vs. Essex Catholic on Sunday, December 13. SFX shots and fast breaks just couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net with Essex going up 11 at one point. A late game surge by the boys made the game very close, but Essex rallied late to hold them off for a 29-23 win. SFX player William Burke netted 4, while Chris Prim and Zac Roy added 2 each. So far for the season, the team is even at a 1-1 record.

7/8 Girls Team:
The start of SFX 7/8 girls team season has been exciting to say the least. The first game of the season went into overtime against a talented Mater Christi team, with six different players scoring for SFX. Cassidy G. led the way with 5 points and Olivia and Amy chipped in with four each. The girls played tough defense, but unfortunately could not get any baskets to fall during the OT to secure a win.

The St. Francis students on the team are Jacob Wetzel, Eli Parzyck, Logan Rivait, Elliot Wood, Joseph Canney, Luke St. Peter, Drew Bessette, Shane Mobley and Dallas St. Peter. The players had a good opportunity to put the skills and plays they learned from Coach St. Peter and Coach Wood into action on the court. Over time, it will be great to see how the boys progress. Final score was 33-13. The highlight of the game was when Eli Parzyck took the ball down the court for the final play of the game. Time was ticking down as he passed the half court line and lunched the ball into the air making a 3 pointer at the final buzzer. The whole gym went crazy!!!
